Visit Keweenaw Awards 85,000 dollars to eleven projects in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. Recently Visit Keweenaw announced it has awarded grants as a part of the Destination Development program that seeks to fund projects that highlight different aspects of the Copper Country.
The largest grant awarded went to the Swedetown Recreation area for beginner hiking and biking trail development. Other trail projects included the Copper Harbor Trail Club Berry Picker Trail on brock way mountain, the Hancock Trails Club for the Swedetown Creek Bridge connection to Maasto Hiihto, the Keweenaw County Sheriff for trail safety signage, and the Keweenaw ATV Club for directional signs. Those four project grants equal close to 31000 dollars invested into trail networks.
Main Street Calumet will receive 8,000 dollars for seating and planters downtown. Calumet Township will receive 5000 dollars toward a new disc golf course project. Chassell will use under 2,000 dollars for setting up wayfinding signage at the kayak launch on the Sturgeon River off us-41. Houghton plans to use its 7500-dollar grant to install a Historic Houghton signage downtown.
Another grant will fund a viewing tower railing installation at the Calumet Air Force Station Heritage Museum and the Painesdale Mine and Shaft Association will use a little less than 5,000 dollars for interpretive signage and a visitor kiosk.
Visit Keweenaw Executive Director Brad Barnett says that the destination development grant program helped many organizations related to recreation and tourism more accessible in the region, improving the enjoyment residents and travelers have while experiencing the copper country, leaving lasting impressions
