With the canal run just a couple of days away Houghton County Sheriff Josh Saaranen has a message for motorists. Slow down. The main route for the hundreds of runners and walkers for the canal run follows M 203, with the half marathon starting as far away from the Quincy Green as the Koskela Road intersection, 3 miles past McLain State Park. During Saturday morning M-203 will have a reduced speed limit to 25 miles per hour.
Just keep in mind that there’s going to be many runners out throughout the course. Mind the speed limit. We’ll have deputies on the course as well to monitor traffic. If at all possible, we ask the public to please take alternative routes, rather, back roads, or if you’re willing to make a little bit longer drive, maybe go up to Calumet, and south on 203 to get to places such as McLain State Park. – Sheriff Josh Saaranen, Houghton County Sheriff
Race Director Angela Luskin thanks the Hancock police department, sheriff’s office, and MSP troopers for helping with road safety during the race. Making sure everyone stays safe on the course becomes everyone’s responsibility, not just drivers. Luskin says that runners and walkers need to stay in the left lane when making their way downtown.
We ask that all racers, walkers, and runners stay on the left side of the course. So the north side of M203 as they’re heading into downtown Hancock, trying to do single file as best that we can. Sheriff Saaranen says that the Hancock police department will maintain the M-203 and US-41 intersection during the Canal Run so participants make it across the highway safely. Roadway speed limit reduction to 25 miles per hour will begin at 7 am and last until 11am. As a reminder, Hancock police will begin to shut down Quincy street Friday night for key ingredients at 5;30 pm. Last-minute canal run registration and bib pick-up will take place at Quincy Green from 3 pm to 8 pm.
