Just as Michigan Tech’s students will get into the swing of the semester this fall, the university will host its annual parade of nations to welcome and back its international students and celebrate cultures in the Keweenaw. Each edition of the festivities has included a way for local students to get involved, through a logo design competition and essay contest. Earlier in the year the Parade of Nations organizers released the 2024 logo, designed by Lake Linden High School student Isabella Tampas. Today the Parade of Nations announces the 2024 essay contest winner. Kayleigh Mattson will earn a 1000 dollar scholarship toward her first fall semester at Michigan Technological University. Organizers say that Mattson eloquently captured the spirit of the essay contest when writing…
“I was born in a rural area of Louisiana where I went to school and had friends from various backgrounds, including black and Hispanic. When I moved to Michigan, in 5th grade, I noticed a change in the student population. Living in two different places allowed me to appreciate the differences among people. Diversity is about welcoming people with different beliefs and ensuring everyone has equal opportunities.”
Mattson was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Houghton in the essay contest. Shell be recognized during that festivities on September 21st. Those interested in learning more about the Parade of Nations at Michigan Technological University can find more details here.
