Glen William Rantala, age 79, of Tapiola, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, July 10th, 2024 at the Omega House in Houghton.
He was born August 9, 1944 in L’Anse, the son of William and Elma (Kauranen) Rantala. He grew up in Alston and graduated from Baraga High School in 1963. Glen went on to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Tech, graduating in 1967. He was employed with Schneider Electric in Massachusetts and then worked in Menominee Falls, Wisconsin until his retirement, when he returned to the Upper Peninsula and settled in Tapiola.
Glen was a Ham Radio operator and enjoyed Ham Radio contesting, and belonged to local groups of other operators. He also enjoyed riding 4-wheelers with his friends, and he liked to be outdoors in the woods with his power saw cutting firewood. Glen would donate firewood to friends and neighbors who could not make wood themselves, and also donated firewood to organizations for the elderly.
Glen is preceded in death by his parents, William and Elma, and brother, Robert Alan. He is survived by numerous cousins.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 18th from 10 to 11 a.m. at Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie. His funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Kelly Ylitalo officiating. A luncheon will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Nisula Cemetery. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
