Montero Shines as Tigers Win Pitching Duel – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League play last evening…
• Gold Standard defeated Superior Service 4-2. Payton Goldsworthy was the winning pitcher with 17 strikeouts, and also hit a home run. Josie Heinonen took the loss while striking out 13 for Superior Service. Milly Loukus had a triple.
• Tervo Agency blanked Superior National Bank 4-0. Ellen Coppernoll and Mel Baker combined to throw the shutout.
• JB’s Sales and Service outslugged Tervo Agency 19 to 8. Stella Soumis was the winning pitcher. At the plate for JB’s, Ellie Hainault had a triple and a single and Lexie Burns had a double and a single. For Tervo Agency, Amber Schoenicke and Sarah Dowd each had a triple and a single.

Twilight League

In Copper Country Twilight Baseball League action tonight…
• Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker plays Northern Driveline at the Stanton field.
• Houghton Building Supply-Stanton faces REL-Mohawk Technology at the Wolverine field.

MLB

The Tigers eked out a 1-0 victory in a pitchers’ duel with the Guardians last night. Rookie Keider Montero turned in his second straight good start, pitching into the seventh inning, scattering three hits, and not allowing a Cleveland runner past first base. Detroit plated the game’s only run in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Guradians shortstop Brayan Rocchio mishandled a potential double play ball off the bat of Mark Cahna. Jake Rogers scampered home from third base.

The Tigers host the Guardians again tonight. Kenta Maeda will start against Ben Lively. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Javier Báez rejoined the Tigers last night, after missing five weeks with a back problem. Ryan Kreidler was returned to Toledo. Austin Meadows has been placed on the injured list, after straining a hamstring in Sunday’s game. He’s expected to miss a few weeks. Akil Baddoo has been brought back from the Mud Hens to fill in.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and welcome the Pirates tonight. Colin Rae will start for Milwaukee. Pitsburgh has not yet named a starter.

Horseshoes

In Copper Country Horseshoe League action last night…
• Harter’s Party Store blanked Maple Leaf 9-0.
• Houghton Building Supply shut out L and L 9-0.
• Calumet One shut down Ahmeek Fire Department 8-1.
• Calumet Electronics downed Eva’s Hideaway 6-3.
• Dreamland One outscored Luigi’s Bar 7-2.
• Bucko’s Party Store defeated Mohawk Superette 7-2.

Running

This year’s Run the Keweenaw trails competition will take place Saturday and Sunday. Competitive events include the Mt. Baldy Summit Run, the Copper Harbor Trails Challenge, and the Carl Olsen Memorial 25k. There will also be a Junior Trail Run, and a non-competitive run/hike.
