Keith Homers Twice in Tigers Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

Colt Keith homered twice, as the Tigers held off the Reds 5-4 last evening. Parker Meadows and Riley Greene also hit home runs. Reese Olson pitched into the sixth, allowing two runs on three hits. Cincinnati made it close with two runs off Jason Foley in the ninth inning. They nearly tied it, but third baseman Matt Vierling fielded a hard-hit bouncer, and threw out Blake Dunn at the plate on a close play that was upheld by a video review. Foley then got Santiago Espinal to ground out to first base to end the contest.

The Tigers continue that series at Cincinnati this afternoon. Detroit has not named a starter. Hunter Greene will pitch for the Reds. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Meadows returned to the Tigers last night, after spending time in Toledo working on his hitting. Akil Baddoo was sent down to the Mud Hens to make room.

The Brewers fell to the Dodgers 8-5 last night. Will Smith hit three home runs for Los Angeles, two off newly-acquired Milwaukee starter Aaron Civale. Civale allowed four runs over five innings. He left with a lead, thanks to a five-run fifth inning powered by a Rhys Hoskins grand slam. After Bryan Hudson gave up Smith’s third homer in the seventh, the Dodgers plated three in the eighth off Elvis Peguero and Hoby Milner to claim the win.

The Brewers visit the Dodgers again tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against James Paxton.

High School

The Houghton High School hockey team is holding a returnables drive this weekend. Donations can be dropped off through Sunday at Tadych’s Marketplace, and through Tuesday at the high school. Proceeds will support the team’s travel expenses.

Frisbee

The 66th annual Coca Cola International Frisbee Tournament opens today at the Hancock Driving Park. Defending champion Shottle Bop and runner-up Monte Carlo head a strong local contingent. Several Marquette teams are also expected to contend for the Julius T. Nachazel Cup. As many as 20 squads are expected. Spectator admission is free, and food will be available. The tournament will wrap up tomorrow.
