MLB
The Tigers collected just four hits in a 5-0 loss to the Angels last night. Jack Flaherty had an off-night, pitching into the sixth, but allowing three home runs. L-A’s Davis Daniel struck out eight over eight in his first major league start.
The Tigers visit the Angels again tonight. Kenta Maeda will start against Zach Plesac. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Cubs tonight. Colin Rea will pitch against Jameson Taillon.
The first round of voting has ended for the Major League Baseball All-Star Team. Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Bryce Harper of the Phillies were the leading vote-getters in each league, and earn starting positions in the summer classic. The second round of voting begins Sunday. Two Brewers remain in contention – catcher William Contreras, and outfielder Christian Yelich.
NBA
The Pistons added Swedish forward Bobi Klintman in the second round of the NBA draft last evening. Klintman played last season with the Cairns Taipans in the Australian National Basketball League. Detroit traded up before the start of the second round, sending their original 53rd pick to the Timberwolves in exchange for guard Wendell Moore Jr. and the 37th selection. The move opens up $2.5 million in salary cap space for Minnesota.
NHL
The NHL Draft opens tonight with the first round. The Red Wings have the 15th pick. Rounds two through six will take place tomorrow.
Former Red Wings executive Ken Holland will not continue as general manager of the Oilers. Holland led Edmonton to the Stanley Cup finals this year. He was Detroit’s GM from 1997 to 2019. His contract with the Oilers expires in a few days, and an announcement from the club says the parting was a mutual decision.
ATV
The Keweenaw ATV Club will celebrate 20 years of supporting trails in the area with a party and membership drive tomorrow. Activities begin at 2:00 at Gabe Chopp Park in Ahmeek. The club will provide a picnic lunch. Bring your own adult beverages, if desired. A brief business meeting for the month of July will also be held. Anyone interested in learning more about the club, and its activities maintaining area trails, is welcome.
