The Houghton Planning Commission has passed a site plan review to the city council made by Houghton Building Supply. In the fall of 2023, Houghton Building Supply came to Houghton to propose a second structure on the business’s lot for storing materials. Since then Houghton Building Supply has continued to grow, leading company representatives Adam Kemper and Matt Zimmerman to appear during the June planning commission meeting for a site plan review. Houghton Building Supply wishes to construct an adjoining structure to its main facility to store lumber supplies.
“So as you can see this is where that 50 by 60 proposed addition is going to be going. It is in the B3 general business zone within Houghton. Commissioners review the city of Houghton’s development requirements, confirming that the site plan fits the city’s mandates for business developments.
Two other items on the commission’s agenda introduced important topics that the planning commission will spend plenty of time on shortly. Now that the city has recently passed the 2024 – 28 master plan, the planning commission will form a new zoning committee to review the site plan review process and potential other areas of zoning. The second committee Houghton’s planning commission will need to work on developing the city’s marketing as required by MEDC’s Redevelopment Ready City program. Commissioners briefly discussed some potential questions likely to arise during that process and what a potential committee could look like. During the commission’s July meeting, it will begin naming members to the Zoning Review Committee. And further, discuss what the requirements by MEDC entail for Houghton.
