Fast Pitch Softball
In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League play last night…
• JB’s defeated Superior National Bank 12 to 2. Sadie Biekkola was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts and three walks. Morgan Erkkila struck out six, but took the loss. Biekkola and Brynn Arko each had an out-of-the-park home run for JB’s. For Superior National Bank, Morgan Erkkila had a triple and Brita Haataja and a double.
• Tervo Agency got past Gold Standard 6-4. Olivia Wakeham struck out nine, and earned the win. Lena Myhren struck out seven, and took the loss for Gold Standard. Wakeham had a double and a single for Tervo, and Cassidy Albrecht had two singles. For Gold Standard, Laura Lyons and Kara Kinnunen each had two singles.
Twilight League
In Copper Country Twilight League baseball this evening…
• Garnet Garage faces Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker at the Driving Park.
• Northern Driveline meets Houghton Building Supply-Stanton at the Stanton field.
MLB
The Tigers’ bats fell back to sleep last night, in an 8-1 loss to the Phillies. Bottom-of-the-order hitters Zach McKinstry and Carson Kelly accounted for four of Detroit’s seven hits. Philadelphia jumped on Casey Mize for four runs in the first inning. They added three off Tyler Holton in the sixth, and one off Mason Englert in the eighth.
The Tigers host the Phillies again tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Ranger Suárez. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Last night’s game featured a rare triple play. Matt Vierling’s soft broken-bat liner was caught by pitcher Aaron Nola, who quickly threw to first to double up Carson Kelly. Detroit’s Zach McKinstry headed home from third base, didn’t notice that the ball had been caught, and was also doubled off. It was the first 1-3-5 triple play in the majors since Detroit turned one in 1929.
Rhys Hoskins’ grand slam powered a five-run sixth inning, as the Brewers downed the Rangers 6-3 last night.
The Brewers welcome the Rangers tonight. Bryse Wilson will pitch against Andrew Heaney.
Elieser Hernández is no longer a Brewer. The reliever was designated for assignment last week. No team claimed him on waivers, but he has elected to become a free agent.
NHL
The Panthers won the Stanley Cup last night, edging the Oilers 2-1 in game seven of the series. Edmonton became just the third team in history to lose the first three games, then come back to force a game seven. They couldn’t become the first to claim a win, though, as Sam Reinhart’s second-period goal gave the Panthers their first NHL title. Connor McDavid of the Oilers was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the series’ Most Valuable Player.
Michigan Sports Hall of Fame
One of the greatest hockey players in Michigan Tech history will be added to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. Goaltender Tony Esposito is included in this year’s class, which will be installed in October. Esposito grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He was a three-time All-American, and led the Huskies to the 1965 national championship. Esposito went on to play 16 seasons in the NHL – 15 for the Blackhawks. He won the Vezina trophy as the league’s top goalie three times, and was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988. The honor is posthumous – Esposito passed away in 2021 at age 78.
Other members of the Class of 2024 include former University of Michigan quarterback and coach Jim Harbaugh, former Wolverine football players Larry Foote, Braylon Edwards and Jake Long, former Detroit Tigers Cecil Fielder and Ivan Rodriguez, former Flint Northern High School and Detroit Shock star Deanna Nolan, Detroit native and former Michigan State basketball standout Shawn Respert, longtime Detroit TV sportscaster Don Shane, and former Red Wings executive Ken Holland.
Horseshoes
In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last evening…
• Dreamland One blanked Maple Leaf 9-0.
• Luigi’s stopped Mohawk Superette 8-1.
• Eva’s Hideaway shaded Houghton Building Supply 5-4.
• Calumet Electronics shut down Ahmeek Fire Department 8-1.
• Calumet One turned back L and L 9-0.
• Harter’s Party Store defeated Bucko’s Party Store 8-1.
Fishing
Two one-day youth fishing camps have been set for later this week.
The camps are being sponsored by the Calumet Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club, along with the Keweenaw National Historical Park, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and the National Park Foundation. They’re designed for kids 16 years old or younger.
Participants will be introduced to fishing, and will also get a glimpse of the history of the Keweenaw.
Camps will take place this Friday and Saturday, and will be limited to 25 participants.
