Michigan State Police and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Partner to Provide Gun Locks to Residents

Michigan State Police promote National Gun Violence Awareness Month by distributing free gun locks. As a part of the National Gun Violence Awareness Month, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with the Michigan state police to remind families about free gun locks available at MDHHS county offices and some local health departments.

The cable-style gun locks from Project ChildSafe are offered as a part of an effort to protect children from unsecured firearms. The state has used 500,000 dollars from the state police budget to purchase 75,000 cable-style firearm locks. MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel says that preventative measures such as gun locks make a difference in the efforts to increase public safety. Additionally, the department is proud to partner with the Michigan state police to provide cable-style locks to Michigan residents.

In 2020 firearm injuries became the number one cause of death for children in the state and country. In 2024 Michigan enacted Public Act 17 of 2023 to require the safe storage of unattended firearms, kept unloaded, and locked away with a lock device or inside a locked box when a minor is present or on the premises.
