Obituary: Kimberly Marie Fortier

Kimberly Marie Fortier, age 61 of L’Anse, Michigan passed away on Thursday, June 20th, 2024 at her home with her loving family by her side.

She was born February 8th, 1963 in L’Anse, daughter of Robert and Shirley (LaFernier) Velmer. Kim graduated from Baraga High School. She married Cyril Joseph Fortier Jr on June 17, 1991 in L’Anse. Kim worked as a cook for numerous restaurants, including the Baraga Drive-In. She drove shuttle bus for the Ojibwa casino and guest services, and was a caregiver for home care and in the nursing home. She had a soft heart for animals and people that needed extra care.

Kim enjoyed going to rummage sales, shopping at St Vincent de Paul, cooking, going to the casino, and most of all loved her grandchildren.

Kim was a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

Surviving are her husband of 33 years, Cyril “Joe” Fortier of L’Anse; children, Kyle LaPlante of Baraga, Tyler (Faith) LaPlante of Skanee, MI, Joel (Abby) Fortier of L’Anse; step children, Tony Fortier and Jolene Fortier both of L’Anse; mother Shirley Velmer of Baraga; brother Michael (Jacquelyn) Velmer of Herman; grandchildren, Lilianna, Kylee, Titan, Madison, Braylin, Noah, Randal, Jacob, Chelsey, Reese, Troy; special aunt Helen Tollefson of Skanee; uncle Stanley LaFernier of Baraga; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding her in death is her father Robert Velmer; and in-laws Cyril and Martha Fortier.

Per Kim’s request no public service will be held. The family will have a private mass of Christian Burial, and burial will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. Jacobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
