High School
At the U.P. Classic basketball showcase in St. Ignace Saturday…
• The girls East All-Stars defeated the West All-Stars 87-83 in overtime. Michigan Tech-bound Ella Mason from Negaunee shared MVP honors with Escanaba’s Kiera Maki. Each scored 26 points.
• The boys East All-Stars outscored the West All-Stars 110-103. St. Ignace’s Jonny Ingalls took the MVP award by scoring 48 points. He’s headed to Northern Michigan University this fall.
The Norway High School baseball team fell 10-0 to Beal City in the Division IV state championship game Saturday. Aggies senior Cayden Smith tossed a perfect five-inning game to get the win, striking out eight of the 15 batters he faced. The Knights were only the second U.P. team ever to reach a tournament final. Escanaba lost the 2006 Division II title game to Battle Creek Lakeview, 9-2.
MLB
The Tigers scored early and often, and cruised to a 13-5 victory over the Astros Saturday. Houston starter Justin Verlander was a late scratch because of a stiff neck, and Detroit took advantage of the opportunity, plating 10 runs in the first three innings. Riley Greene had four hits, including two homers, and drove in six runs. Matt Vierling, Carson Kelly and Colt Keith also went deep. Keith and Wenceel Pérez each had four hits. Jack Flaherty scattered three hits over five shutout innings. All of Houston’s runs came off Mason Englert in the seventh.
The Tigers visit the Astros again today. Kenta Maeda will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Former Detroit closer Alex Lange suffered a potentially serious arm injury while pitching for Toledo Friday evening. Team officials are reviewing medical tests that were run Saturday. Lange was demoted several weeks ago, after struggling with his control.
The Brewers shut down the Reds 3-1 Saturday. Joey Ortiz’ three-run homer in the fifth was all Milwaukee needed. Jared Koenig opened the game for the Crew, getting the first two outs before he was replaced by Bryse Wilson, who pitched shutout ball through the sixth.
The Brewers host the Reds again this afternoon. Colin Rae will pitch against Frankie Montas.
NHL
The Oilers kept their season alive by thrashing the Panthers 8-1 Saturday evening. Florida leads the Stanley Cup series 3-1, and will host game five Tuesday.
NBA
The NBA championship series continues tomorrow night in Boston. The Celtics lead the Mavericks 3-1.
NFL
The Lions have a new kicker. Jake Bates has signed a two-year contract, after a standout season for the Michigan Panthers in the UFL, including three field goals of more than 60 yards.
Detroit also has a new front office staffer. Former Cardinals research and analytics manager Charlie Adkins will become the Lions’ senior director of football operations.
