Isle Royale National Park Alerts Visitors of Increased Wolf Sightings on East Side of the Park

Isle Royale National Park warns of potential increased wolf and human interactions on the east end of the park. Yesterday the Isle Royale National Park notified the public that there has been an increase in wolf sightings near Rock Harbor and Tobin Harbor. Park Staff say that the have been sightings near the Rock Harbor Campground, Lodge, and Trail, and the Three Mile Campground. As well as the potential for increased interactions near the Tobin Harbor area between McCargoe Cove and Chippewa Harbor. National Park staff closely monitors wolf movements throughout the island advising visitors to minimize disturbances to wildlife and be wolf-aware.

Some tips the national park suggests visitors take while in the area include keeping food and personal items in a secured location. Do not approach a wolf. Encourage the animal to leave the area by making loud noises like yelling or clapping. Wolf attacks are extremely rare, however, if one were to act aggressively make yourself larger with tree branches or hiking poles. Fight by any means necessary if attacked.

Reports all wolf sightings to Isle Royale National Park staff. Reports can be made to rangers while traveling in the park or at the park visitor centers.
