Matt Vierling’s leadoff home run got Detroit off to a quick start, but Washington ripped Reese Olsen for five runs on 10 hits through the first five frames. Detroit narrowed the gap with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but the Nats responded with two off Will Vest in the top of the ninth. A solo home run by Riley Greene in the bottom of the ninth closed the scoring.
The Tigers will try to avoid a series sweep when they host the Nationals again this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Patrick Corbin. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
