Houghton Introduces the LoHo Lounge and New Social District to the Downtown

Houghton’s social district officially opens today. The new district, dubbed the LoHo Lounge for Lower Houghton, rests along the Portage Canal between Isle Royale Street and the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. The district is broken into two areas.

Throughout the entire social district visitors and customers can carry their beverage around downtown. However, the city has set up a consumption district within the LoHo Lounge near the waterfront and pier, to keep public consumption of alcohol to a specific area.

Houghton has three downtown businesses already enrolled as participating businesses including The Den, The Ambassador, and Keweenaw Brewing Company. The district’s opening times will vary per business. Stopping by any of the three locations, those christening the LoHo Lounge can purchase a social district beverage, and head to the waterfront.

All Michigan alcohol consumption laws still apply within the district such as individuals are 21 years old or older, one drink per customer, and all alcohol must be consumed within the social district. Around the city, Houghton has placed signage to mark the district’s boundaries. Please drink responsibly.
