Houghton, Jeffers Fall in Baseball Regionals – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In the high school baseball tournament yesterday…
• Houghton’s season ended with a 6-3 loss to Gladstone in the Division III regional semifinals. The Braves got just five hits, but scored three times in the sixth to put the game away. Gladstone will take on Charlevoix for the regional title Saturday. The Rayders blanked Grayling 10-0 yesterday.
• Levi Frahm and Cody Turner combined to throw a no-hitter, but Jeffers’ season still concluded with a 4-3 loss to Norway in the Division IV regional semifinals. Trayton Helminen and Bryson Kangas each had two hits. The Knights will face Rudyard for the regional championship Saturday. The Bulldogs dispatched Harbor Springs 6-4 yesterday.

Twilight League

In Copper Country Twilight Baseball League play this evening…
• Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker meets Garnet Garage at the Houghton field.
• Houghton Building Supply-Stanton plays Northern Driveline at the Stanton field.

MLB

The Tigers lost to the Rangers 9-1 last night. Detroit’s only run came on Justin-Henry Malloy’s first major league home run. Tigers’ starter Kenta Maeda threw just two pitches before leaving the game with what is being described as “abdominal discomfort.” He’ll be evaluated today, and could be headed back to the injured list. Joey Wentz relieved him, and took the loss.

Detroit pitcher Alex Faedo was placed on the injured list yesterday because of a hip problem. Mason Englert, who was set to head back to Toledo after Shelby Miller was activated, was brought back to fill in.

The Brewers dropped a 2-0 pitchers duel to the Phillies. Each team collected just three hits. One of Philadelphia’s was a two-run homer by Nick Castellanos off Aaron Ashby.

Milwaukee pitcher Robert Gasser has been added to the injured list with a left flexor strain. Starter Tobias Myers has also been recalled. Janson Junk has been sent down to the Sounds.

Both Detroit and Milwaukee have today off. The Tigers will host the Brewers for a three-game series beginning tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The NBA championship series begins tonight, as the Celtics host the Mavericks.

College Football

The format for the new NCAA 12-team major college football playoff has been revealed. The initial six games will be played December 20th and 21st, with the higher-seeded team hosting. The quarterfinals will be played December 31st and January 1st in the Rose, Fiesta, Peach and Sugar Bowls. The semifinals will be staged the following weekend in the Orange and Cotton Bowls. The championship game will be played January 20th in Atlanta.

Fishing

The annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby will be held Sunday. Registration will be open at the Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsmen’s Association clubhouse Saturday evening between 6:00 and 8:00, and Sunday from 7:00 until 1:00. Fishing will be open from 7:00 until 4:00. This is a family event, with an entry fee of just $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for juniors and $1.00 for children. No fishing licenses are needed, because this is Michigan’s annual Free Fishing Weekend.

Local Sports Broadcasts

  • Saturday – Division Three softball regional tournament at Gladstone – Houghton v Grayling at 10:00; regional championship game at 2:00 (if Gremlins advance). Games broadcast on 97.7 the Wolf.
