Houghton Baseball, Softball Win District Titles – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton claimed the Division III baseball district tournament crown yesterday. In the semifinals, the Gremlins edged Hancock 6-5 in a 12-inning game that lasted three-and-a-half hours. Iron Mountain shut down Negaunee 6-1 in the other semifinal. Houghton then shaded the Mountaineers 5-4 in the final. The Gremlins will travel to Gladstone to take on the Braves in a regional semifinal game Wednesday. Charlevoix and Grayling will meet in the other regional semifinal.

The Houghton softball team also brought home a Division III district title yesterday. Calumet’s season ended with a 12-2 loss to Negaunee in the first semifinal. The Gremlins shut down Westwood 13-3 in the second. Houghton then slipped past the Miners 4-3 in the championship game. Each team scored three runs in the first inning. Jacey Sleeman singled home the winning run in the fourth. Estella Soumis went the distance to earn the win. The Gremlins will face Grayling in a regional semifinal game Saturday at Gladstone. Gladstone and Boyne City will meet in the other semifinal.

NHL

The Oilers dimmed the Stars 2-1 last night. Edmonton wins the Western Conference championship series 4-2. The Stanley Cup series against the Panthers will open Saturday in Florida.

MLB

The Tigers scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning, and beat the Red Sox 8-4 yesterday. Andy Ibáñez doubled home Wenceel Pérez with the game-winning run. Andrew Chafin shut Boston down in the bottom of the inning, and earned the win.

The Tigers open a series at Texas tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Nathan Eovaldi. Coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has sent struggling first baseman Spencer Torkelson down to Toledo to try to regain his mojo. Torkelson slugged 31 home runs last season, but is batting just .201 with four home runs through the first two months of this campaign. Outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy has been called up to fill the roster spot.

Jackson Chourio homered, as the Brewers downed the White Sox 6-3.

The Brewers visit the Phillies tonight.
