Vierling’s Walkoff Caps Tigers’ Comeback – Monday Sports Wrap

NHL

In the NHL tournament, Alex Wennberg’s overtime goal lifted the Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the Panthers last night. New York leads the Eastern Conference championship series 2-1, with game four set for tomorrow in Miami.

The Oilers host the the Stars tonight. The Western Conference championship series is tied 1-1.

NBA

In the NBA tournament, the Mavericks outscored the Timberwolves 116-107 last night. Dallas takes a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference championship series, which continues tomorrow night in Dallas.

The Celtics visit the Pacers tonight. Boston leads the Eastern Conference championship series 3-0.

MLB

The Tigers blew a big early lead, then came back to win a wild 14-11 victory over the Blue Jays yesterday. Detroit was up 8-3 after five innings, but Toronto clawed back, and led by two after scoring five runs in the top of the eighth. Detroit tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by Mark Cahna, then won it when Matt Vierling clubbed a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. It was Vierling’s second homer of the day. Spencer Torkelson and Carson Kelly also went deep.

The Tigers have Memorial Day off, and host the Pirates tomorrow. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Jared Jones. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers fell to the Red Sox 2-1 yesterday. Pittsburgh scored the winning run off Elvis Peguero in the bottom of the eighth.

The Brewers host the Cubs this afternoon. Robert Gasser will start against Justin Steele.

Milwaukee has brought Oliver Dunn back up from Nashville. Joey Weimer has been sent down.

Auto Racing

Josef Newgarden held off Pato O’Ward to win his second straight Indianapolis 500 yesterday. The start of the race was delayed four hours by a storm.

Cycling

At the Ride the Keweenaw Enduro in Copper Harbor yesterday, Sam O’Carroll from Nelsonville, Wisconsin took the title in the expert division, edging out Bodee McFadden from Duluth by less than a half-second. Lexi Curran of Marquette took the women’s title. Jacob Butler from Grafton, Wisconsin claimed the men’s sport division title, with Calumet’s Kyla Anderson taking the women’s crown.
