While the Copper Country warms up to spring and heads into summer. The cities of Houghton and Hancock invite the Keweenaw peninsula’s residents to enjoy a Saturday afternoon in the town with the area’s first official event headed into summer with Spring. Hancock DDA coordinator Todd Gast says that the idea came out of wanting to support local businesses after the slow winter tourism season and a desire to work together as the region’s population center.
“We really feel like this is more of a regional event and we want our local residents obviously to come out and celebrate our local businesses because without our local businesses we would not have much of a great economic value to our cities. So it’s important for us to really celebrate our local businesses. This is a great way to do that. We invite anyone to come in and enjoy that. We’ve got approximately 12 businesses. in Hancock and in Houghton that are wanting to be involved and they’re doing all kinds of different promotions. So it’s just going to be a great Saturday afternoon to celebrate local businesses.” – Todd Gast, DDA Coordinator, City of Hancock
Around town, Houghton and Hancock businesses participating in Spring into Summer will offer special discounts during the afternoon. Including restaurants, local shops, or a place for a sweet treat.
“Yeah, and I think people are really wanting to come outside and enjoy our cities. We chose this date, May 18th, from noon till 4pm because it’s right between Michigan Tech graduation, right between Memorial Day weekend, and it’s right before the tourist season. So we really felt that. This is a really a great date to choose for us to have this type of an event here in the cities of Houghton and Hancock. Get the people out, enjoy our beautiful spring. It’s not too warm and there’s no bugs.” – Todd Gast, DDA Coordinator, City of Hancock
