Lawmakers Begin Looking For Plan B After Proposal One Failed

Michigan House Speaker Kevin Cotter on Wednesday began to layout the House Republican groundwork for a plan to fund road repairs in Michigan.

Cotter, who gave bullet points but no specifics to reporters a day after a ballot proposal to raise the sales tax failed, is optimistic a long-term solution can be found soon noting lawmakers still have two months worth of session days before summer break.

Cotter will lay out the plan to his fellow Republicans in the House soon and says it will draw from existing money and won’t include a tax increase – although he won’t rule one out completely.

He’ll talk specifics in a few days.

Proposal 1, which would have raised the sales tax and triggered ten other laws to provide funding for roads, local government and schools, was rejected by an 80-20 margin in Tuesday’s election.
