Michigan DNR announces changes to the state coyote hunting season. Previously year-round, the Department of Natural Resources recently voted to approve two regulations affecting coyote hunters.
The first change will shorten the season from all year, to from July 15th to April 15th each year.
The second regulation coming to coyote hunting will expand the ability to hunt at night with center-fire firearms of .269 caliber and smaller for coyote, fox, and raccoon for the limited deer hunting zone in the lower peninsula.
The department assures that farmers and people dealing with a nuisance issue can still mitigate coyote conflicts.
The changes to the coyote hunt come about three months after a hunter downstate in Calhoun County downstate mistook a wolf for a coyote while hunting this past January. The department’s Law Enforcement division recently opened an investigation into the kill.
