Ishpeming Wins First Girls Hoops State Crown – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The Ishpeming High School girls basketball team claimed its first state title Saturday, with a decisive 73-54 victory over Kingston. The Hematites fell behind early, and trailed 22-11 at the end of the first quarter. They rallied in the second quarter, though, and took a one-point lead into halftime. In the second half, sophomore Jenessa Eagle ignited an Ishpeming surge, scoring 15 of her 27 points in the third quarter. Jenna Maki, the school’s all-time leading scorer, added 25 in her final game. It’s the first girls basketball title for any U.P. school since 2015, when Calumet and Saint Ignace won championships.

In the other state finals…
• Ypsilanti Arbor Prep edged Niles Brandywine 33-30 in Division Three.
• Detroit Edison shut down Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard 41-33 in Division Two.
• West Bloomfield stuffed Grand Blanc 60-30 in Division One.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team will learn later today whom they’ll face in the opening round of the NCAA hockey tournament. Regional competition will take place next weekend.

GLHL

Paul Sturos’ hat trick let the Calumet Wolverines to an 8-2 victory over the DePere Deacons Saturday night

The Portage Lake Pioneers will host the Deacons today at 1:00 at the Dee.

NHL

The Red Wings fell to the Predators 1-0 Saturday.

The Wings visit the Capitals Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons host the Pelicans today, with coverage at 2:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB Spring Training

Half of the Tigers outslugged the Yankees 11-6 Saturday. Brant Hurter was hit for five runs over five innings. Alex Faedo relieved him with a couple of scoreless innings, and got the win. Parker Meadows, Carson Kelly and Kerry Carpenter homered. The other half of the Tigers outlasted the Blue Jays 10-7. Kenta Maeda struggled, allowing six run on 10 hits before leaving in the third inning. Jake Rogers, Andy Ibáñez and Akil Baddoo homered.

The Tigers will play the Rays today. Jack Flaherty will start.

The Brewers scored five runs in the seventh inning, and downed the Cubs 7-4 Saturday. Gary Sánchez homered.

The Brewers will play the Diamondbacks today. D.L. Hall will start.
