High School

Winners were crowned in the boys basketball tournament at the Breslin Center in East Lansing Saturday.
• In Division Four, Wyoming Tri-Unity dispatched Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart 79-59.
• In Division Three, Niles Brandywine downed Detroit Old Redford 56-48.
• In Division Two, Warren Lincoln shut down Grand Rapids Christian 53-39.
• In Division One, Orchard Lake St Mary’s defeated North Farmington 63-52.

The girls tournament will wrap up this week. Three Upper Peninsula teams will play in the quarterfinals Tuesday…
• In Division Four, Ishpeming will face Saint Ignace at Gladstone High School.
• In Division Two, Negaunee will take on Flint Powers Catholic at Sault Ste. Marie.

College Hockey

Logan Pietila’s goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation powered the Michigan Tech hockey team into the Central Collegiate Hockey Association championship game. Saturday’s 4-3 victory over Minnesota State ended in dramatic, almost bizarre fashion. The Huskies played from behind all night long. Early goals by Jack Works and Kash Rasmussen kept them in the game. Down 3-2, Pietila tied it with a penalty shot with four-and-a-half minutes to go. Then, as the clock ticked down, he fired a shot that was deflected by Mavericks goaltender Alex Tracy. The puck flew over the net, hit the glass, caromed high in the air, came down in front of the net, bouncing off a Mavericks defenseman, then glancing off Tracy’s helmet into the net for the game-winner.

The Huskies will play for the Mason Cup Friday night at Bemidji State. The Beavers eliminated Lake Superior State 4-1 Saturday.

College Basketball

The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team is headed home, after an 81-65 loss to Ferris State in the opening round of the NCAA Division II tournament Saturday. The Wildcats suffered their worst shooting night of the season, connecting on just 34 percent of their attempts. Max Weisbrod scored 24.

The NMU women are also on their way back to Marquette, after dropping a 72-44 decision to top-ranked Grand Valley State in a regional final Saturday. Makaylee Kuhn led the Wildcats with 12 points.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines both had this weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings snapped their seven-game losing streak with a crisp 4-1 victory over the Sabres Saturday. Christian Fischer, Patrick Kane, Daniel Sprong and Lucas Raymond scored. James Reimer stopped 25 shots.

The Wings visit the Capitals Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons host the Heat this afternoon, with coverage at 2:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit will keep veteran Taj Gibson around for the rest of the season. Gibson’s initial 10-day contract has been extended. He’s considered a valuable mentor for the Pistons’ young big men.

MLB Spring Training

The Tigers regulars scored four runs in the fifth inning, and downed the Phillies 6-4 Saturday. Detroit fell behind early, as Tarik Skubal gave up three runs on eight hits over four innings. The rally was powered by home runs from Justyn-Henry Malloy and Eddys Leonard, and an RBI double by Mark Canha.

The Tigers face the Orioles this afternoon. Kenta Maeda will start.

In the Spring Breakout event, the Tigers prospects downed the Phillies prospects 5-1. Jace Jung blasted two home runs.

Half of the Brewers ripped half of the Athletics 11-4 Saturday. Jake Bauers and Oliver Dunn homered. Jakob Junis pitched into the fifth, and allowed three runs on five hits.

The other half of the Brewers downed half of the Rangers 5-1. Eric Haase belted his third home run of the spring, and Christian Yelich launched his first. Freddy Peralta gave up a run on four hits over five innings.

Tonight, the Brewers regulars will face the Royals. Taylor Clarke will start. The Brewers prospects will meet the Royals prospects in the Spring Breakout this afternoon.

NFL

The Bears have traded quarterback Justin Fields to the Steelers. Reports indicate that Chicago will receive a sixth-round pick in the 2025 draft, which could be upgraded to a fourth-round pick depending on how much Fields plays. The Bears are expected to select USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the first pick in this year’s draft.
