Protect the Porkies Speaks Before the Michigan Strategic Fund

Protect the Porkies members spoke before the Michigan Strategic Fund last week regarding the Copperwood Mine in Gogebic County. Currently, the Michigan Strategic Fund is considering a 50 million dollar grant to Highland Copper for its project.

The Protect the Porkies, started as a grassroots collection of residents concerned by the potential mine’s location near Lake Superior outside of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The group argues that Metallic sulfide mining’s process has had many more environmental impacts than benefits, especially projects located near water.

During the past six months, the group has collected signatures as a part of its petition campaign. To today amassing over 13,000 signatures. Those interested in learning more about Protect the Porkies and potential issues with Metallic Sulfide mining can find links to their website below.
