Law enforcement agencies in the Copper Country are increasing their efforts to keep motorcyclists safe this summer. Representatives from more than 10 police agencies gathered in Houghton yesterday to add bumper stickers to their vehicles that say ‘LOOK TWICE, SAVE A LIFE, MOTORCYCLES ARE EVERYWHERE.’
Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean emphasized that cyclists are at a real disadvantage in a collision with a car or truck. Houghton police officer Beth Maatta reminded drivers to be aware that they need to look twice to make sure motorcyclists aren’t hidden in the blind spots in car mirror systems. Maatta’s husband was killed in a motorcycle crash some years ago, and she’s hoping to prevent others from going through what she did. ABATE Regional Coordinator Lewis “Kelly” Kellogg added that the caution also applies for bicyclists and pedestrians. The Copper Country is becoming an increasingly popular destination for motorcycle tours.
