43rd Great Bear Chase Still Plans to Take Off in March

The lack of snow this season won’t keep UP Health Systems from getting excited for the 2024 Great Bear Chase in Calumet. UP Health Systems plans to still hold the annual Nordic ski marathon that regularly invites more than 750 skiers to the Copper Country. Most of whom come from outside the local area. Making the race a much looked forward boost to the regional economy accounting for nearly 700,000 dollars infused into the area each year.

Organizers recognize that the 2024 cross-country ski season has been very difficult on competitions and events across the Midwest with little to no snowfall. GBC Race Director Angela Luskin says that long-term forecasts are contributing to their positive outlook, however they would like to see some more snow before March 9th. The Great Bear Chase includes several race formats for skiers to compete in ranging from 10 kilometers to a 50-k skiathlon.

The 43rd Great Bear Chase will need volunteers to ensure that the race can operate. Organizers estimate they will need around 100 individuals to have the competition run on the Swedish trails.
