Tech and NMU Hoops Teams Split – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The Marquette swim teams swept the U.P. championships Saturday.
• The boys team outswam second-place Houghton 319-214. Beau Hataja of the Gremlins won the 100 backstroke, and took third in the 200 freestyle. Colin Raasio placed second in the 500 freestyle, and third in the 200 individual medley. Ian Evans and Anderson Limkemann finished second and third in the 100 breaststroke. The 400 freestyle relay team placed second. Baha Saleem was third in the diving competition.
• The Houghton girls finished fifth. The 400 freestyle relay team placed third. Meg Ruohonen and Naomi Frahm took third and fourth place in the diving meet.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team dropped a 70-45 decision to Northern Michigan Saturday. The Huskies trailed by one point at halftime, but were outscored 39-15 in the second half. Katelyn Meister led the Huskies with 14 points. Makaylee Kuhn and Ana Rhude each scored 16 for NMU.

The Tech men’s team upended the 24th-ranked Wildcats 80-69. Marcus Tomashek scored 34 for the Huskies, and Dan Gherezgher added 22. Carson Smith led Northern with 20 points.

College Hockey

Both the Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan hockey teams had the weekend off.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers outskated the De Pere Deacons 4-2 Saturday evening.

The Calumet Wolverines lost to the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 8-0.

Adult Hockey

The L’Anse Winter Classic Old-Timer’s Hockey Tournament concludes today at Meadowbrook Arena in L’Anse tomorrow and Sunday. The event is a major fundraiser to support operations of the Meadowbrook and Baraga rinks. The public is welcome. For details and the weekend schedule, click here

NHL

The Red Wings snapped their two-game losing streak with a 5-0 victory over the Flames Saturday. James Reimer made 38 saves. Patrick Kane, J.T. Compher, Dylan Larkin, David Perron and Lucas Raymond scored.

The Wings visit the Kraken tomorrow. Coverage will start at 3:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons are off for the all star break, and return to action at Indiana Thursday.

MLB

Former Brewers pitcher Chase Anderson has signed a minor league deal with the Pirates. Anderson struggled with the Rays and Rockies last season.
