Keweenaw Storm LogoThe Keweenaw Storm girls’ hockey team blanked the Chazy Lady Flyers 4-0 in the opening game of the National Championship tournament in Amherst, New York, yesterday. Jessica Schlaff, Kenna Farrey, Mackenzie Hietala and Alexis Pyykkonen each scored even-strength goals. Schlaff added an assist, and Chelsea Jacques had two assists. Stephanie King stopped 24 shots in goal. The Storm will face the Princeton Tiger Lillies from New Jersey this evening at 7:30.

Red Wings LogoIn the N-H-L last night… the Red Wings edged the Bruins 3-2. Once again, Gustav Nyquist was the hero… beating Boston goalie Tuukka Rask on a breakaway in the third quarter to score the winning goal. Nyquist has scored 23 goals in his last 28 games… and Detroit has won three in a row. The Wings host the Sabres tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Detroit Tigers Circle LogoIn baseball yesterday… the Tigers again defeated the Royals in their final at-bat of the game. Ian Kinsler’s two-out single in the bottom of the 10th drove in Austin Jackson with the winning run in the 2-1 victory. Kinsler’s homer earlier in the game accounted for Detroit’s other run. Max Scherzer pitched eight shutout innings. Joe Nathan gave up the tying run in the ninth… but Al Alburquerque pitched a scoreless 10th to earn the win. Manager Brad Ausmus used his first two replay challenges of the season in the game… and won them both. Those two teams wrap up their series in Detroit this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will pitch against Yordano Ventura. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Milwaukee Brewers Circle LogoIn Milwaukee, Matt Garza and Aaron Harang each pitched no-hit ball through six innings. Garza gave up a solo home run to Chris Johnson in the seventh… and the Braves came away with a 1-0 victory over the Brewers. The Brewers have today off, and will open an interleague series at Boston tomorrow afternoon. Marco Estrada will start against Jake Peavy.

The Finlandia baseball team is scheduled to play two games at Dominican University in Illinois this evening.

Detroit Pistons LogoIn the N-B-A last night… the Pistons lost to the Pacers 101-94. Detroit led by a point at the end of the third quarter… but, once again, faded down the stretch. Josh Smith led Detroit with 24 points. The Pistons play at Brooklyn tomorrow night.

Detroit Lions LionIn N-F-L news… quarterback Dan Orlovsky has returned to the Detroit Lions. Orlovsky was a backup in Detroit from 2005 through 2008… then played for the Texans, Buccaneers and Colts… where he worked with new Lions’ head coach Jim Caldwell. Orlovsky will back up Matthew Stafford… replacing Shaun Hill. Hill signed a contract with the Rams.
