Hockey Wins for ‘Dogs, Jets – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening…
• Hancock swamped Negaunee 13-5.
• Jeffers got past Kingsford 5-3. Brogan Turner, Tage Rajala, Brit Heinonen, Cody Turner and Cage Osterman scored for the Jets, who led 3-1 at the end of the opening period. Trayton Helminen had two assists, and Kasen Helminen stopped 17 shots.

In girls high school basketball last night…
• Calumet fell to Negaunee 57-44. Caitlyn Strom scored 19 points for the Copper Kings. Ella Mason led the Miners with 14.
• Jeffers got past Wakefield-Marenisco 46-33. Taylor Heinonen scored 12 for the Jets. Emily DeFaro had 13 for the Cardinals.
• Ewen-Trout Creek shut down Watersmeet 63-11.

In boys action…
• Calumet stopped L’Anse 55-23. The Copper Kings held the Purple Hornets scoreless in the first quarter, and led 30-5 at halftime. L’Anse’s Easton Foucault led all scorers with 13 points. Kent Koskela netted 12 for the Copper Kings, who got scoring from 10 players. Hear the game replay here.
• Hancock fell to Gwinn 47-27.
• Jeffers dispatched Lake Linden-Hubbell 73-49. Matthew Schutz powered the Jets with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Levi Frahm added 23 points. Gabe Popko scored 17 for the Lakes, and Josh Daavatilla netted 15.
• Baraga outscored Republic-Michigamme 60-46.
• Ontonagon fell to Ironwood 54-48.
• Ewen-Trout Creek downed Watersmeet 66-45.

On the boys schedule this evening…
• Calumet travels to Iron Mountain.

At Mont Ripley yesterday, the Houghton boys Alpine ski team finished a close second to Marquette. Eli Heathman won the giant slalom, and placed second in the slalom behind Marquette’s Sam Dehlin. Connor Kamm and Jack Haeussler both had season-best performances in the slalom with 5th and 3rd place finishes. Haeussler also had season-best performance with a 5th place finish in the giant slalom. The girls team finished fourth, behind Marquette, Norway and Ironwood. See full results here.

Both Houghton swim teams fell to Marquette yesterday, the boys 106-55, and the girls 141-44. The Gremlins’ only individual winner was Collin Raasio in the 100 backstroke.

NHL

The Red Wings return from the all-star break Saturday afternoon, when they host the Canucks. Coverage will start at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons begin a west coast trip tonight at Sacramento, with coverage starting at 9:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Former Tigers reliever Chasen Shreve has signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers.

Tigers pitchers and catchers report to spring training a week from today.
