Houghton County Prosecutor Adds Hilary Baker and Alex Berger to Staff

The Houghton County prosecutor’s office has hired two new assistant prosecutors. Houghton County prosecutor Dan Helmer announced last Friday he has hired Hilary Baker, and Alex Berger to join his office. One of Helmer’s first priorities when taking on duties to Houghton County’s court late last year included hiring additional staff to assist with the workload. Baker and Berger’s addition to the prosecutor’s office fills assistant roles for the first time in over a year. Both will start on the first Monday in February.

Hilary Baker joins Houghton County as the Chief assistant prosecutor. She is a graduate of Calvin College and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Baker gained 10 years of prosecutorial experience in Kent County and Muskegon County. Starting in Kent County as an assistant prosecutor under Bill Forsyth and Chris Becker. Then working under DJ Hilson as an APA in Muskegon County.

Alex Berger will fill a second Assistant Prosecutor position. After graduating from Indiana University Berger practiced as a public defender in Wyoming before he was eelected Weston county prosecutor in 2018. Currently, Berger manages a criminal defense firm, Berger Law, in Marquette.

Additionally, the county has authorized the prosecutor’s office to hire a third assistant prosecutor in a part-time/contractual role. Helmer thanked the Houghton County Commission and staff for their support in filling the vacancies with qualified candidates. Additionally, he is excited to bring Baker and Berger into the office.
