In the final game of the Gibson Cup series Saturday night, the Portage Lake Pioneers scored four unanswered goals in the third period… and defeated the Calumet Wolverines 6-3. Charlie Turner scored twice for Portage Lake… and Josh Harju netted two goals for Calumet. The Pioneers maintain possession of the Gibson Cup… winning the best-of-three series three games to two.

In the N-H-L yesterday… Gustav Nyquist continued his hot streak, as the Red Wings defeated the Lightning 3-2. Nyquist has scored 11 goals in the past nine games. Jonas Gustavsson stopped 26 shots to earn the win in goal. The Wings host the Bruins Wednesday evening. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400, WCCY.

The season ended for both Michigan and Michigan State’s men’s basketball teams yesterday. The Spartans were upended by seventh-seeded Connecticut 60-54 in the Regional finals… while the Wolverines lost to eighth-seeded Kentucky 75-72.

The Huskies and Wildcats will meet in the second semifinal game Saturday night. Wisconsin will face top-seed Florida in the first game. Hear them both on AM 1400, WCCY.

In the N-B-A… the Pistons host the Bucks tonight. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400, WCCY.

In baseball… the Tigers open the regular season at home this afternoon against the Royals. Justin Verlander will start against James Shields. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

For the first time in five seasons, Austin Jackson will not be Detroit’s leadoff hitter. New second baseman Ian Kinsler will take over that role. Torii Hunter will bat second. Jackson will bat fifth… behind Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. Alex Gonzalez will start at shortstop.

The Brewers open the regular season at home against the Braves this afternoon. Yovani Gallardo will start against Julio Teheran. Jean Segura will start at shortstop, and says his sore shoulder is feeling better.

The Finlandia University softball team lost both of their games to Wisconsin-River Falls Friday night. In the first game, the Falcons scored four times in the fifth, and four times in the sixth, en route to a  9-3 victory. In the nightcap, the Lions led 4-1 going into the seventh inning, but River Falls scored four in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 5-4 walk-off victory.

The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team lost 8-1 at Wayne State Saturday afternoon… and fell 7-2 at Northwood yesterday morning.
