Houghton Drops the Chook for New Year’s Eve

“Three, two, one, Happy New Year!” – Crowd gathered at the Houghton Waterfront Pier

Over the weekend communities around the globe ring in the new year with festive traditions and fun ornaments. Even Houghton got in on the fun.

For the first time, the City of Houghton held a New Year’s Eve celebration with the help of Visit Keweenaw. The evening began late at 11:30 pm, with many residents walking to the Houghton Waterfront Pier, to find music dancing, and time with friends and family. Some kids were even up late to help their parents start the countdown.

Houghton’s festivities were top off by a chook. Raised high on the flagpole near the Portage Lake District Library. The chook was lit up with red and white lights. As the countdown started the hat made its slow descent down, marking the change over from 2023 to 2024. Happy New Year everyone.
