Secretary of Veterans Affairs Visits VA Facilities in the Western Upper Peninsula

Secretary of the Veterans Affairs, Dennis McDonough, recently visited VA facilities in the western Upper Peninsula. McDonough’s trip to the region offered the secretary an important opportunity to interact with Veteran Affairs staff and leadership. And discuss current challenges as facilities seek to better care for veterans and implement rural health initiatives. Dr. Audrey Liston and Dr. Allison Helman with the Hancock Community-Based Outpatient Clinic were individually recognized by the secretary for their commitment to ICARE values and the mission of Veterans Affairs. McDonough toured each of the facilities in Iron Mountain and Hancock and met some local veterans coming in for appointments. Leadership with regional veteran’s affairs facilities expressed that it was a great opportunity to meet face-to-face with the National VA to discuss the challenges of rural healthcare and what initiatives may be impactful for veterans’ quality of life.
