In the opening game of the Gibson Cup series last night, the Calumet Wolverines edged the Portage Lake Pioneers 3-2. Game two of the best-of-three series will be played at the Colosseum tonight… with game three at the Dee tomorrow night, if necessary. Hear the entire series on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In the N-H-L… the Red Wings gave up a couple of early goals… fought back… but wound up losing to the Canadiens 5-4. Tomas Tatar tied it with two goals early in the third period… but Montreal responded with two of their own, and hung on for the win. With nine games to go, Detroit remains tied with the Capitals and Maple Leafs for the final playoff spot. The Wings skate at Toronto tomorrow night.

Local schools are well-represented on this year’s All U-P Girls’ High School Basketball Teams. Houghton’s Elisa Jurmu, and Madi Swanson from L’Anse were named to the Dream Team… along with Lexi Gussert from Forest Park. Gussert was the unanimous choice as Class D Player of the Year. Lexi Rowe from Calumet was named to the Class A-B-C First Team. L’Anse’s Valarie Rajala and Kelsey Ross were named to the Second Team, as was Kelsie Richards from Houghton. Brooke Turin from Ontonagon made the Class D First Team. Julia Daavettila from Dollar Bay and Shelby Seppanen from Jeffers were placed on the Second Team. In baseball spring training action yesterday, Max Scherzer pitched into the seventh, as the Tigers blasted the Braves 9-3. Scherzer gave up three runs on four hits, and struck out six. Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer. The Tigers will face the Rays this afternoon… and wrap up their spring schedule against the Nationals in Washington tomorrow. The Tigers open the regular season at home Monday afternoon against the Royals.

The Tigers are said to be close to a deal to extend Cabrera’s contract. An announcement is scheduled today. Sources say the new arrangement would keep Cabrera in a Detroit uniform through the 2023 season… and would be worth at least a quarter-billion dollars. More details are here.

Meanwhile, utility player Don Kelly worked out yesterday… said his strained hamstring felt fine… and that he’d be ready for opening day.

Kyle Lohse turned in five solid inning, as the Brewers lost to the Reds 8-2. Lohse gave up two runs over five innings. The Brewers will play exhibition games against the Royals tonight and tomorrow afternoon at Miller Park… then open the regular season at Atlanta on Monday.

The Finlandia University softball team plays a doubleheader against Wisconsin-River Falls tonight. The games were originally scheduled for tomorrow… but have been relocated from the River Falls field to the Rosemount Dome in Rosemount, Minnesota.

 

The Lions’ baseball games at Carroll College this weekend have been postponed.
