One New Member to Join KBIC Council

One new member will join three incumbents who were returned to the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Council in Saturday’s general election.

Unofficial results posted by the KBIC indicate that current council President Doreen Blaker and Assistant Secretary Robert “RD” Curtis won reelection in the Baraga District, with 331 and 241 votes, respectively. Alden “Auddie” Connor trailed with 136 votes, and Zelina L. Pittsley-Huhta recorded 45 votes.

In the L’Anse District, current council Vice-President Toni Minton polled 196 votes to earn reelection. Dale Goodreau collected 212 votes. He will replace Randall Haataja on the council. Haataja did not run for reelection. Sam Loonsfoot garnered 181 votes, and Serene Gauthier 157.

Mark Smith will take over as the tribe’s Associate Judge. He out-polled current Associate Judge Tashina Lee Emery 207-187. Emery had been appointed to her post last May.

Results are considered unofficial until ratified by the Tribal Council.
