Keweenaw Snowmobile Club Closer to Completing New Groomer Barn in Calumet

Over the past couple of years, the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club has seen a lot of growth. From adding new trails, and new members, to purchasing new equipment, and constructing a new maintenance barn. The Snowmobile club plans to move from Mohawk to Calumet to be closer to part deliveries, and better access to the main trail intersections. Yesterday the group met with Visit Keweenaw’s Events Coordinator Jesse Wiederhold, to receive a donation that will support its move south.

“So trail three is going to open back up seven to eight miles of trails. And that potentially could help our season stay longer. As snow stays on the ground and there are more miles of trails to groom.” – Jesse Wiederhold, Public Relations and Events Coordinator, Visit Keweenaw

The funds donated by visiting Keweenaw were added to donations to the snowmobile club’s Giving Tuesday totals. The club plans to use those funds to complete work at the new groomer garage in Calumet. The project is one step closer to being completed, as yesterday the club expected the facility’s garage doors to arrive.

“So we start in Toivola and go all the way to Copper Harbor. The Moyle family had graciously donated this piece of property to the club. So it made sense to put it here.” – Chad VanBennekom, Vice President, Keweenaw Snowmobile Club

The Keweenaw Snowmobile Club has a lot to get ready before the start of the snowmobile season. Soon the club will meet with the Michigan DNR and other stakeholders at the Lake Linden Trail Three re-opening, as well as prepare the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to stay in its locked position for the winter. Those interested in getting involved with the snowmobile club, as a member trail groomer or volunteer can contact the Keweenaw snowmobile for more information.
