Copperwood Mine Environmental Work Proceeding

Activity is picking up at a potential new copper mine in Gogebic County.

Highland Copper Company says it has initiated site activity at the Copperwood Mine north of Bessemer.

Officials report they have satisfied their initial wetland permit obligations, and begun environmental mitigation projects.

Highland’s Wetlands and Streams Permit required that some early site work be completed by the end of 2023. The company says it has met that goal, to the satisfaction of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

As a result, Highland maintains that all key Michigan State permits remain in good standing.

Additional activities included the construction of compensating wetlands, infrastructure for the relocation of a stream, and road improvements.

Environmental mitigation activities are expected to continue over the next 12 to 24 months.

Highland Copper owns 100 percent of the Copperwood project. It also initiated a project to begin mining an untapped section of copper reserves adjacent to the former White Pine Mine. Highland recently sold a majority interest in the White Pine North project to Kinterra Capital, to obtain cash to push the Copperwood Mine forward.
