The Houghton Police Department plans to sponsor two officers through training at the police academy. Through funding with Michigan Commission Law Enforcement standards, the department will seek two candidates passionate about their community and interested in joining the department’s team of officers. Chief Donnelly says that the mcoles grant for officer training pays trainees during their time at the academy, and covers housing, as well as equipment and uniforms. The department hopes to have the candidates begin training at the academy as soon as possible, with the intent to bring them onto the force sometime next summer. Additionally, those selected by the department will have a choice of which academy they attend, though historically Houghton Police officers have completed training at the Northern Michigan University Police Academy. Chief Donnelly says that the department will need all applications for the positions with the city of Houghton completed by next Wednesday. Those interested in the position and have questions about what training involves should contact the Houghton police department at 906 482 2121.
