Michigan Senate Republicans Urge Permitting for the Line 5 Tunnel Project

Michigan Senate Republicans urge the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to proceed with permitting the Great Lakes Tunnel Project. In a letter recently addressed to Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Lieutenant General Scott Spellmon, the Michigan senate’s 18 Republicans urged the army corps to permit the tunnel project for line 5 under the straits of Mackinaw.

Last year the Army Corps opened the tunnel project’s public comment period, receiving more than 17,000 responses. Due to the nature of the project, its location in the Great Lakes, and the large flow of fuel that travels Line 5 the Army Corps of Engineers has taken its time with the permitting process. According to the Army Corps Tunnel project website, the department has been collecting data and will have a second public comment period after drafting an environmental impact statement in 2024.

The Michigan republican senators’ letter additionally urges the governor to expedite the state’s permitting for the project alongside the Army Corps’ approval process. Find a full copy of the letter addressed to the Army Corps of Engineers for the line 5 tunnel project, here.
