VB Wins for Kings, ‘Dogs, Lakes, Jets, Hornets – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet swept Westwood 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-9).
• Hancock defeated Ishpeming 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-16).
• Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked Baraga 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-16). Abi Codere led the Lakes with 10 kills, and Madison Buschell had six. Alli Corrigan served four aces. Payton Goldsworthy had 17 assists, and Ashlyn Steves recorded 18 digs.
• Jeffers shut down Bessemer 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-11). Sara Johnson recorded 12 assists for the Jets. Kaeda Rajala had seven kills and four aces, and Mia Nordstrom served three aces.
• L’Anse got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-1 (25-15, 25-20, 11-25, 25-22). Mylee Londo has 25 kills and six aces for the Purple Hornets. Brooklyn Dompier added 20 kills and three aces, Keira Dakota had nine kills and Emmy Mensch had six kills.

In volleyball tomorrow, Calumet, Houghton and Hancock will compete at the WestPAC Tourney at Ishpeming.

At the Copper Mountain Conference cross country meet in Ironwood yesterday…
• Jeffers won the boys title, easily outpointing second-place Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Chassell finished fourth. Kalvin Kytta of the Panthers took first place individually. Landon Larson and Cameron Anderson of the Jets placed second and third. Joshua Gaunt led the Blue Bolts with a ninth-place finish.
• Chassell won the girls title. The Panthers took three of the top-10 positions, led by Lily Etelamaki’s fifth-place finish. Taryn Maki of Dollar Bay took first place individually.

• Calumet welcomes Gladstone for Parents Night. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. The homecoming parade that was postponed because of bad weather last week will begin at 6:00 near the school on Mine Street.
• Houghton hosts Negaunee. Coverage will start at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Hancock entertains Westwood.
• The L’Anse game at Gwinn has been canceled, because L’Anse called off its season.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell takes on Gogebic at the Bessemer Field.
• Ontonagon travels to Mid-Peninsula.

In high school soccer…
• Houghton plays at the U.P. tournament tomorrow at Marquette.

College Volleyball

Both the Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan volleyball teams compete at the Midwest Regional Crossover in Hammond, Indiana this weekend…
• Tech opens against Hillsdale College this afternoon, and plays Maryville tonight.
• Northern faces Trevecca Nazarene this afternoon.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Grand Valley State this evening.

The Northern Michigan women’s team plays at Davenport University this afternoon. The men’s team visits Saginaw Valley State today.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team hosts Alaska tonight at 7:07 and tomorrow at 6:07. The Huskies are ranked ninth in this week’s USCHO.com poll, and 10th in the USA Hockey poll.

The NMU hockey team visits 17th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth tonight and tomorrow.

College Football

Michigan Tech plays Northern Michigan in the annual Miner’s Cup game tomorrow night at 7:00 at the Superior Dome.

NHL

The Red Wings opened their season with a 4-3 loss at New Jersey last night. Daniel Spring, Alex DeBrincat and Robby Fabbri scored for Detroit. Ville Husso stopped 23 shots, and took the loss in net.

The Wings host the Lightning tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons came from 21 points down to edge the Thunder 128-125 in preseason play last evening. Late free throws by Marcus Sasser and Stanley Umude sealed the win. James Wiseman led a balanced attack with 20 points. Listen for selected Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In the National League yesterday…
• The Phillies dispatched the Braves 3-1. Former Tiger Nick Castellanos hit two home runs for the second consecutive game. Philadelphia takes that Divisional series 3-1, and will face the Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series.

The Astros will meet the Rangers in the American League Championship Series.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Chiefs shut down the Broncos 19-8.

The Lions visit the Buccaneers in a 4:25 game Sunday on 99.3 The Lift. The Packers have the weekend off.
