Volleyball Wins for ‘Dogs, Kings and Jets – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Hancock swept Houghton 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-17).
• Calumet blanked L’Anse 3-0 (25-16, 25-5, 25-17).
• Jeffers stopped Wakefield-Marenisco 3-0 (25-6, 25-19, 25-23). Kaeda Rajala led the team with 12 kills. Sara Johnson had 13 assists and 14 digs.

On the volleyball schedule tonight…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Chassell.

In volleyball tomorrow…
• Calumet plays at a tournament in the Detroit area.
• Houghton competes at the Wrightstown Invitational in Wisconsin.

The Houghton cross country team swept the Tracy Strom Invitational at the Al Quaal Preserve in Ishpeming yesterday.
• The boys easily out-pointed second-place Negaunee. Hancock finished fourth. Birk Seagren of the Gremlins took individual honors, with Isaiah Lawson third. David Bylkas paced the Bulldogs with an eighth-place finish.
• The girls cruised past runner-up Hancock. Ishpeming’s Lola Korpi was the top individual finisher, with Tessa Rautiola and Roman Peterlin of the Gremlins finishing second and third. Hancock’s Ella Keranen placed fifth.

At the Baraga Cross Country Invitational at the L’Anse Golf Course yesterday…
• The Jeffers boys took an easy win. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City came in second, and Chassell fourth. Four Jets finished in the top 10, with Landon Larson second, and Cameron Anderson third. Kalvin Kytta of Chassell was the individual winner.
• Ironwood won the girls meet, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City placing third. Taryn Maki of the Blue Bolts placed first individually.

In high school football tonight…
• Calumet welcomes Houghton. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Hancock travels to Kingsford.
• L’Anse has called off its season because of low numbers and injuries, so the Purple Hornets’ game against Ishpeming has been canceled.
• Ontonagon entertains Norway.

Tomorrow…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Forest Park in a 1:30 game.

The Houghton soccer team plays at Escanaba tomorrow.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team will host Davenport University in the annual Homecoming game tomorrow at 1:00. Both teams are unbeaten, and the visiting Panthers are ranked 18th in the nation in Division II.

The Northern Michigan football team plays at top-ranked Ferris State tomorrow.

College Soccer

The Northern Michigan men’s soccer team lost 1-0 to Wisconsin-Eau Claire last night. The only goal of the game came off a penalty kick in the 88th minute. The men’s team plays at Saint Cloud State Sunday afternoon.

The Northern women’s team welcomes Grand Valley State this afternoon, and Davenport Sunday.

The Michigan Tech soccer team hosts Davenport this evening at 6:00, and Grand Valley Sunday at noon.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team entertains Lake Superior State tonight at 7:00, and Ferris State tomorrow at 4:00.

The Northern volleyball team hosts Ferris State tonight, and Lake Superior State tomorrow.

NHL

The Red Wings lost 4-3 to the Capitals in a preseason contest last evening in Washington. Robby Fabbri scored twice for Detroit. Sebastian Cossa and Alex Lyon split time in net.

The Wings will host the Capitals in an exhibition tomorrow night. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers completed their rain-suspended game against the Royals with an 8-0 victory yesterday. Miguel Cabrera blasted his 511th career home run. Tyler Nevin and Jake Rogers also homered. Tarik Skubal tossed four shutout innings before play was suspended Wednesday night. Three relievers allowed just two hits in the final five frames yesterday.

Detroit then stopped the Royals 7-3 in yesterday’s regularly scheduled game. Spencer Torkelson hit his 30th home run of the season as Detroit plated all seven of their runs in the seventh inning. Parker Meadows had three hits.

The Tigers begin their final series of the season at home tonight against the Guardians. Joey Wentz will start against Cal Quantrill. Coverage will start at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers blanked the Cardinals 3-0 yesterday. Corbin Burnes, Julio Teheran and Ethan Small combined for the shutout, with Burnes notching his 200th strikeout of the season. Christian Yelich had two hits.

The Brewers host the Cubs tonight. Colin Rea will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.

Milwaukee brought rookie outfielder Garrett Mitchell off the injured list yesterday. He’d been out since mid-April with a shoulder injury. Utility player Brian Anderson was designated for assignment.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Lions got off to a quick start, and cruised past the Packers 34-20. Detroit led by 24 points at halftime. David Montgomery rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns for Detroit. Jared Goff passed for 210 yards and one score. Green Bay’s Jordan Love passed for one touchdown and ran for another, but also threw two interceptions, both to Detroit’s Jerry Jacobs.
