It can be difficult to throw away old shoes knowing how long it takes certain materials to decompose. With the idea of helping keep old shoes out of the landfill, and on the soles of feet, while also raising funds for a student trip, Barkell Elementary has partnered with Got Sneakers for a fundraiser. Got Sneakers is a recycling organization focused on repurposing shoes many people consider past their use, and seeks to keep large amounts of rubber out of landfills. Got Sneakers pays groups and organizations for shoes collected in a fundraiser, and then inspects each shoe for quality control before being shipped to developing nations. Barkell Elementary students will collect used shoes from the area to raise funds for the 5th grade class’ trip to Mackinaw Island. For an older pair of shoes in excellent condition, Got Sneakers will pay the school 7 dollars for each pair, and a minimum of 25 cents for a pair in recyclable condition.
