In high school volleyball last evening…
• Ewen-Trout Creek v Bessemer – no report.

On the schedule tonight…
• Calumet plays at Ishpeming. Coverage will begin around 6:10 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Houghton entertains Marquette. Coverage will start around 6:10 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Hancock travels to West Iron County.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
• Chassell journeys to Ewen-Trout Creek.
• Jeffers entertains Baraga.

Houghton continued its cross country dominance, sweeping the Calumet Invitational at the Swedetown Trails yesterday.
• The Gremlin boys took a narrow team victory over Jeffers, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City third, and Hancock seventh. The Jets’ Landon Larson and Cameron Anderson took first and second individually, with Houghton’s Birk Seagren third.
• The girls easily outdistanced runner-up Hancock. Ishpeming’s Lola Korpi took first individually, followed by Tessa Rautiola and Roman Peterlin of the Gremlins.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech is the team to beat in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association this season.

The preseason coaches’ poll released yesterday put the Huskies on top, and gave them four first place votes. Northern Michigan finished second, and garnered three first place votes. Bowling Green, Bemidji State, St. Thomas, Minnesota State, Ferris State and Lake Superior State rounded out the voting. Tech goaltender Blake Pietila and forward Kyle Kukkonen were named to the coaches’ preseason team, along with Andre Ghantous and Josh Zinger from the Wildcats.

The preseason media poll released yesterday also placed the Huskies at number-one. Northern was second, followed by Bowling Green, Minnesota State, Bemidji State, St. Thomas, Ferris State and Lake Superior State. Defenseman Jed Pietila joined Huskies teammates Blake Pietila and Kukkonen on the preseason team, along with Ghantous and Zinger from NMU.

College Football

Michigan Tech junior punter Brenden Lach has been named the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Lach averaged 47.4 yards on eight punts in the Huskies’ victory at Wisconsin-Platteville.

MLB

Jake Rogers hit his 20th home run of the season, but the Tigers lost to the Dodgers 8-3 last evening. Eduardo Rodriguez struggled, allowing five runs over three innings before leaving the game with a muscle spasm in his shoulder. Former Tiger J.D. Martinez had two home runs, and five RBI.

Rogers becomes just the fifth Tigers catcher in history to hit 20 home runs in a season, and the first since Mickey Tettleton in 1991.

The Tigers visit the Dodgers again tonight. Reese Olson is expected to pitch against Bobby Miller, although the Tigers may again use Miguel Díaz as an opener. Coverage will start at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

With less than two weeks remaining in the season, the Tigers indicated that they may not pitch Rodriguez again.

The Brewers lost a 1-0 pitching duel to the Cardinals last evening. Willy Peralta took the tough loss, surrendering a home run to Willson Contreras.

The Brewers visit the Cardinals again this evening. Trevor Magill is expected to open for Milwaukee, with Colin Rae following him. Drew Rom will pitch for St. Louis.

Rea has been called back from Nashville to fill the spot vacated by Thyago Vieira, who has been placed on the injured list with a calf strain.

The Cubs were idle, and the Reds won, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division stands at six games over both Cincinnati and Chicago.

NFL

In last night’s NFL games…
• The Saints edged the Panthers 20-17.
• The Steelers outscored the Browns 26-22.

Sunday’s loss to the Seahawks was a costly one for the Lions. Pass rusher James Houston has been added to the injured list with what could be a broken ankle. He might be able to return mid-season. Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson has reportedly been diagnosed with a torn pectoral muscle, which probably ends his season.
