Baraga County DNR Land Included in New Group Up for Review

The DNR asks the public to weigh in on the state’s land review for group 8. Eleven counties are included in the Group 8 review, including Baraga County. Since 2013 Michigan’s Department of natural resources has sought to review the state’s ownership of land parcels that are less than 200 square acres, due to irregular boundaries or are difficult to manage.

Baraga County has ten parcels under review, including land surrounding May Lake, and islands in Craig Lake. Many of the parcels are difficult to access from the main highway through Baraga County along US-41.

The county-by-county land review process allows the department to more effectively evaluate the state land portfolio to support its mission of protecting natural resources and providing access to recreational opportunities.
