Volleyball wins for Kings, Gremlins, ‘Dogs – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet swept Iron Mountain 3-0 (25-9, 25-6, 25-14).
• Houghton downed Westwood 3-1 (13-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-15). Sophia Neves had 12 kills, Brynn Arko had 10 kills and four aces, and Laney Johnson had six aces and 26 assists.
• Hancock dropped the first two sets, then came back to defeat Jeffers 3-2 (21-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-21, 15-8).
• Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Bessemer 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15). Abi Codere led the Lakes with 10 kills and 21 digs. Madison Buschell had seven kills and six aces. Payton Goldsworthy had 23 assists and Ashlyn Steves had 19 digs for the night.
• L’Anse lost at Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-16).

On the volleyball schedule tonight…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City visits Wakefield-Marenisco.

Houghton swept its own Bill Fezzy Memorial cross country meet at the Tech Trails yesterday.
• On the girls side, Hancock finished second. Tessa Rautiola of the Gremlins took first place individually, and Taryn Maki of Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished second.
• On the boys side, Jeffers finished second, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fourth, Chassell seventh and Hancock eighth. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta claimed first place individually, with Jeffers’ Cameron Anderson second.

On tonight’s high school football schedule…
• Calumet visits Negaunee. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Houghton plays at Hancock. This is the first of two meetings between those teams this season. It will count as their WestPAC conference game, but is not the Copper Bowl contest. That will be played in a rematch the final week of the season. Exclusive coverage of tonight’s game will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• L’Anse visits West Iron County.
• Ontonagon was supposed to host Carney-Nadeau, but the Wolves have canceled their season.

 • Lake Linden-Hubbell has filled an empty weekend by adding a home game against Norway tomorrow afternoon at 1:30.

College Volleyball

Both the Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan volleyball teams are playing at the Minnesota-Duluth Tournament this weekend…
• The Huskies lost to the seventh-ranked host Bulldogs 3-0 last night (27-25, 25-14, 25-23). Lindy Oujiri led a balanced attack with nine kills. Tech will face Saint Cloud State this afternoon.
• The Wildcats dropped a 3-0 decision to fifth-ranked Saint Cloud State last evening. Northern will play Central Washington this afternoon.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team opens its season at home against Hillsdale tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00.

The Northern Michigan football team hosts Lake Erie College tomorrow at 1:00.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Illinois-Springfield this afternoon, then visits Lewis University Sunday.

The Northern Michigan men’s soccer team played to a 0-0 tie at Lewis University yesterday. The NMU men play at Thomas More tomorrow.

The Northern women’s soccer team plays at Lewis today, and Illinois-Springfield Sunday.

MLB

The Tigers trounced the Yankees 10-3 last night. Spencer Torkelson hit two home runs, and Andy Ibáñez hit one out. Matt Vierling had four hits.

The Tigers host the White Sox tonight. Reese Olson will start against Mike Clevinger. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit officially added pitcher Matt Manning to the injured list yesterday, after he suffered a broken foot in Wednesday night’s game. Trey Wingenter has been called up from Toledo.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and visit the Yankees tonight. Colin Rea will start against Luis Severino.

The Cubs lost, and Cincinnati was idle, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division stands at two games over Chicago, and five-and-a-half games over Cincinnati.

NFL

The Lions opened the NFL season with a stunning 21-20 upset over the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs last night. Detroit grabbed an early lead when Jared Goff hit Amon-Ra St. Brown with a nine-yard TD pass in the first quarter. Kansas City surged ahead with two second-quarter touchdowns, but the Lions defense held them to just two field goals in the second half. Brian Branch returned an interception 50 yards for a Lions touchdown in the third quarter, and David Montgomery’s eight-yard TD run with seven minutes remaining was the game-winner.

The Packers begin their campaign Sunday afternoon at Chicago.
