Obituary: Mary N. Stahl

Mary Nancy Ikonen “Stahl”, 64, a resident of Lakeview Manor in Hancock, passed away Monday, September 4, 2023, at her home with her family by her side.

Mary was born on July 26, 1959, in Butte, Montana to the late Hugo and Mildred (Pawlik) Ikonen. She was raised in Butte until the family moved to Lower Michigan near the Detroit area. She was united in marriage to Robert Nelson where they welcomed two children. Mary moved to the Copper Country in the mid 80s and attended Suomi College for 1 year. She worked at the Copper Country Humane Society for 10 years and then later IGA in Calumet where she worked as a baker until illness forced an early retirement.

Mary was a devoted member of the Hancock Housing Commission serving since 2016. She made sure that the concerns of the residents were heard and cared for. Mary’s faith in God helped guide her through her strengths and struggles. It was important to her to donate to local churches. Mary enjoyed fishing, camping, and baking.

Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by a grandson, Caleb Gregory Ikonen Nelson.

She is survived by her daughter, Emily (Hannah) Nelson

                              Her son, Gregory (Macy) Nelson

                        Grandchildren, Nikolas and Olivia Nelson

                        Numerous friends.

A private family gathering will take place at a later time.
