Carnival foods, fair rides, the livestock auction and monster trucks are just around the corner. Tomorrow starts the Houghton County fair, and there are plenty of fun great activities for throughout the entire weekend. Thursday will start out quiet, while fair organizers prepare for the big day on Friday with various exhibits being judged.
“So you have your exhibitors, and there will be different ribbons handed out. But then there is best of show and that’s actually above the blue ribbon class. I think one of the biggest ones, there’s quite a large assortments of fruits and vegetables, there’s another are where people will bring baked items, and antique area, a photo area. There are many different categories. And this is for all ages for children and adults.” – Rick Freeman, Sr., Vice President, Houghton County Fair Board
New to the fair this year includes a Tough Truck rally. That event will replace the typical demolition derby that takes place on Sunday.
“We generally have a demolition derby on Sunday. But we are going to have new this year, a tough Truck rally. And I think our superintendent in going to build a track in the outdoor arena, with maybe some jumps or some curved, banked corners. And it’s going to be up to their imagination of what to do. And I believe it’s a timed event. The truck that gets through there with the bet time will be the winner.” – Rick Freeman, Sr., Vice President, Houghton County Fair Board
The Houghton County Fair Board will also need some volunteers for throughout the weekend. Which will include duties such as setting up tents, moving chairs and tables, and clean up after the fair.
“My goodness, it’s endless. From moving chairs and tables to filling sand bags. And cutting a lot of the weeds and overgrowth before the fair, so we can get it looking nice. And in the exhibitor building there’s a lot of set up of tables. And then inside the ice arena, as well, there’s a stage for entertainment.” – Rick Freeman, Sr., Vice President, Houghton County Fair Board
