MLB

The Cubs broke a 5-5 tie with two runs off Beau Brieske in the top of the ninth last evening, and hung on to edge the Tigers 7-6. Detroit fell behind early, as Alex Faedo gave up four runs over six innings. Home runs by Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter helped Detroit draw even heading into the ninth. A two-out Matt Vierling RBI single in the bottom of the ninth helped narrow the gap, but rookie Parker Meadows flied out to end the game. Meadows did get his first major league hit in the game – a single to right field in the sixth inning.

The Tigers host the Cubs again tonight. Reese Olson will start against former Tiger Drew Smyly. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

To make room for Meadows on the roster, the Tigers sent infielder Nick Maton down to Toledo. Maton has struggled this season, since being obtained in a trade from the Phillies.

Former Detroit catcher Eric Haase has been claimed off waivers by the Guardians. The Guardians also designated former Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris for assignment. He elected to become a free agent after clearing waivers.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and entertain the Twins tonight. Wade Miley will start against Bailey Ober.

With the Cubs’ victory and a Reds’ rainout, Milwaukee leads Chicago by two-and-a-half games in the National League Central Division, with Cincinnati four games back.

NHL

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has retired. Bernier spent 14 seasons in the NHL, including three with the Red Wings. He missed all of last season with a hip injury.
