Democratic lawmakers in Michigan have introduced a series of bills designed to provide tax breaks to the middle class in the state.
The three bills – if approved – would reinstate a per-child tax deduction, a homestead property tax credit and roll back a tax on retirement income.
Callie Melton, who lives in Casnovia, says she got hit with a double whammy losing both the Earned Income Tax Credit and aforementioned per-child tax deduction.
“Why should my children have to sacrifice so that those who can most afford it get more tax cuts,” Melton questioned.
Democrats, however, are the minority party in both the House and Senate and say they’ve had trouble moving the needle on these issues. Despite that, lawmakers say they’ll keep plugging away.
