Houghton Sheriff Warns of Scam

The Houghton County Sheriffs Office is alerting residents about a scam that has been reported in the area.

A person is calling people identifying himself as “Sgt. Johnson” with the “Warrant Unit.” The person is telling people that they need to go to Walmart and send money to the sheriff’s department because they have a warrant or need DNA from a crime.

The only way the Sheriff’s Office accepts money is at the Sheriff’s Office in person, or through
the www.houghtonsheriff.com, where money can be added to inmate accounts, or bonds paid for people that are currently inmates in the county jail.

If you are contacted by this individual, hang up, and notify the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, or another law enforcement agency.
